What it is
Rancho Tropical is a ranch on the coast at Carbonera, south of Puerto Jiménez, between the Golfo Dulce, the Pacific and the rainforest at the tip of the Osa Peninsula. When we first wrote about it in 2014 it was mainly a beach ranch. Today it's best known as a tour company, running trips into Corcovado National Park and around the peninsula. We checked it again in October 2026: its site was being updated that month and it was taking bookings.
The land sits in a biological corridor linked to Corcovado, so a lot of wildlife passes through. Scarlet macaws, squirrel monkeys and white-faced capuchins all turn up on the property.
Corcovado trips
Corcovado is the main event. Rancho Tropical runs:
- Day hikes, with routes through La Leona, Sirena or San Pedrillo depending on the day
- Overnight treks of 2, 3 or 4 days, staying at Sirena ranger station
- Tougher one-way crossings between Sirena and La Leona or Los Patos for fit hikers
The longer routes are serious hikes in heavy heat and humidity, often with stretches on open beach. The company is upfront that they're not for everyone, and it gives clear advice on water, sun protection and fitness. For background on the park itself, see our Corcovado guide.
Tours at the ranch
Several shorter tours start from the ranch at Carbonera:
- Horseback riding: about 2.5 hours through rainforest, open pasture and hill trails down to the coast, with a local guide. No riding experience needed.
- Medicinal garden and forest trails: a walk through a food forest with hundreds of fruit trees and medicinal plants, lagoons that are good for spotting wildlife, a huge old shoemaker tree, stingless bee hives and an old Indigenous site. You'll also see how coconuts and sugar cane are processed the traditional way.
- Tree climbing, night tours and bird watching, each with a naturalist guide.
Other trips
It also offers waterfall rappelling, a rainforest trek, and boat trips to Caño Island for snorkeling or diving. Our scuba diving guide covers Caño Island in more detail.
Who it suits
It suits travelers staying in Puerto Jiménez or along the Matapalo coast who want one company to handle Corcovado and a few active half days. Families will like the ranch tours, which work for most ages. Serious hikers should look at the multi-day treks. If you're staying nearby, Ojo del Mar is an eco-lodge on the same stretch of beach, and Blue Osa is close to town at Playa Tamales.
Getting there
Puerto Jiménez has a domestic airstrip with flights from San José, and it's also reachable by road. The ranch is roughly 15 minutes' drive south of town. Transport to the ranch tours can be set up for an extra fee. See getting around Costa Rica for travel options.
