Our sources
- Official sources first: each business's own website, Costa Rica's national park service (SINAC), airport, ferry and transport operators, and government travel advice.
- Reliable references: encyclopedias and long-running travel references, used to confirm geography, history and distances.
- Our own archive: Travel in Costa Rica has covered the country since 2011, and many pages started as our older articles.
How we check places
Before a hotel, lodge, tour operator or attraction appears on the site, we confirm it's operating, using its official website and recent listings. If we can't confirm a place is still open, we leave it out. If a place has changed its name or what it offers, we say so on its page.
How we write itineraries
Our routes are built from published transport information: shuttle and bus timetables, ferry schedules and domestic flights. Drive times are estimates, and roads and weather in Costa Rica can change them, so we leave slack in every plan.
What we don't do
- We don't accept payment to be listed, ranked or recommended.
- We don't publish prices, because they change often. Check each place's own website.
- We don't invent reviews, ratings or awards.
Photos
Photos of businesses come from those businesses' own websites and are credited to them. Photos of parks, beaches and regions come from Wikimedia Commons under free licenses, with the photographer and license shown.
Keeping things current
Each page shows the date we last checked it. We recheck every page at least once a year and whenever a reader tells us something has changed.
