Lapa Rios

A rainforest lodge at the tip of the Osa Peninsula

Lapa Rios is an eco lodge on its own 1,000-acre rainforest reserve at Cabo Matapalo, at the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula, near Corcovado National Park. It's the pick for travelers who want a comfortable, all-in base for wildlife on the Osa and are willing to travel a long way to get it.

What it's like

Lapa Rios has been one of the Osa Peninsula's best-known lodges for decades, and we first profiled it in 2015. It's still open in 2026, now as part of Böëna Lodges, the small group that also runs Cloud Forest Lodge in Monteverde. Its site had posts from mid-2026 and recent recognition from Michelin and Forbes when we checked in October 2026.

The lodge sits on a ridge inside its own 1,000-acre rainforest reserve near Cabo Matapalo, looking over the Golfo Dulce. The reserve acts as a buffer and wildlife corridor for Corcovado National Park, and it's protected by a conservation easement. Expect howler monkeys at dawn, macaws overhead and plenty of birds from your deck. Costa Rica Journeys has a longer Lapa Rios profile, and All Inclusive Costa Rica lists it among its all-inclusive lodges, since meals are part of most stays.

Rooms and meals

Accommodation is spread across villas, suites and bungalows, built from local materials with thatched roofs, decks and outdoor showers. Some of the newer villas have plunge pools. Meals are served at Guapira, the lodge restaurant, which caters for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets.

Several guided walks and experiences are included in a stay, such as an early bird walk and a waterfall hike, and you can add paid trips: Corcovado by boat or on foot, kayaking, waterfall rappelling, dolphin and whale watching, surfing and night walks. Corcovado permits are limited, so book those as early as you can.

Sustainability

Lapa Rios holds Costa Rica's Certification for Sustainable Tourism and runs largely on solar and small hydro power. Most staff come from nearby communities, and the lodge supports local schools and farms.

Where it fits in a trip

The Osa Peninsula is remote, so it suits the end of a longer trip rather than a quick add-on. Two weeks gives you time to see Arenal and Monteverde, then fly down to Puerto Jiménez for 3 or 4 nights. Our 2-week itinerary and Osa Peninsula guide show how to plan it, including the choice between this side of the peninsula and Drake Bay.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It's ideal for nature lovers, birders, couples and families with children aged 6 or over. It's not right for travelers who dislike heat, humidity, insects or bumpy dirt roads, and a short stay can feel rushed. Allow at least 3 nights.

Getting there

Most guests fly with Sansa from San José to Puerto Jiménez, a flight of about 50 minutes. The lodge's transfer from Puerto Jiménez takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour on a dirt road with a few shallow stream crossings. The lodge can also arrange private flights with Xplore Air or a driver from San José, which takes most of a day. See getting around Costa Rica for domestic flights.
