What it is
The Butterfly Conservatory is a nature and education center in El Castillo, a small village on the south side of Arenal Volcano, above Lake Arenal. We first wrote about it in 2014, and it's still open in 2026. Its official site says it's open every day of the year, from 10 am to 4 pm.
The center started as a rainforest regeneration project, and it still hosts students and volunteers. For visitors, it's a place to see the life cycle of tropical butterflies up close, along with frogs, insects and the plants they depend on.
What you'll see
- Butterfly exhibits, with a live look at each stage from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult.
- An insect museum, with a large collection of tropical insects from the Arenal region.
- Frog and rainforest exhibits, plus gardens and a guided Metamorphosis Tour.
Because much of it is under cover, it's a good choice for a wet afternoon. Arenal gets rain in most months, so it helps to have one or two activities like this up your sleeve.
Where it fits in a trip
Most travelers spend 2 or 3 nights around Arenal, usually based in La Fortuna. A typical stay mixes the volcano trails in Arenal Volcano National Park, hanging bridges, a waterfall and an evening in hot springs. El Castillo is on the quieter south side of the volcano, so the conservatory pairs well with a morning hike in the national park and lunch with a lake view.
Some travelers also choose to stay in El Castillo itself, for a calmer base than La Fortuna. Our Arenal and La Fortuna guide compares the two, and our 7-day itinerary shows how many nights to give the area.
Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
It's a great fit for families with children, curious adults and photographers. It's not a big adventure activity, so if you only have one day in Arenal and want the volcano, rafting or ziplines, you may want to save it for another trip.
Getting there
El Castillo is on the road that runs around the south side of Arenal Volcano, past the national park entrance and toward Lake Arenal. The conservatory is 800 m up the main cement road in the village. Most visitors drive or come by taxi from La Fortuna.
