## What it is

Rancho Capulin is a small, family-run bed and breakfast at Capulín, in the hills above the Tárcoles River on the central Pacific coast. Our old page about it was one of the last posts on the original site, and it's still open: in October 2026 its official site was already listing room rates for 2027.

The location is the selling point. It's about an hour from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), close enough for a first night after a long flight, but already in the warm lowlands and on the way to the Pacific beaches.

## The rooms

There are only a few units, each different:

- **The Terraza:** a large room with a big private deck, a dipping pool, a cooking area and views over the Tárcoles River and the ocean.
- **The Mirador:** on top of the main house, with a balcony looking over the river, Carara and the Pacific. Good for birding and sunsets.
- **The Rancho:** a pool house at the edge of the forest, steps from the swimming pool.
- **Casita Melina 1 and 2:** small houses at the forest edge. Casita 2 has two bedrooms and a small private pool.
- **Casablanca:** a modern villa with jungle and mountain views and its own pool.

Rooms have air conditioning, fans, fridges and Wi-Fi. Breakfast is included in most rates.

## What to do nearby

[Carara National Park](/costa-rica-national-parks/) is about 10 minutes away. It sits where the dry north and the wet south meet, and it's one of the best-known places in Costa Rica to see scarlet macaws. Go early, when the birds are most active.

The Tárcoles River, below the B&B, is famous for its crocodiles, and boat tours run from near the bridge. Jacó, with its surf schools and restaurants, is about 30 minutes' drive away.

## Where it fits in a trip

Use Rancho Capulin as a soft landing on day 1 or a calm last night before your flight home. It also works as a 1- or 2-night birding stop on the drive between San José and [Manuel Antonio](/manuel-antonio/). Our [birdwatching guide](/birdwatching-costa-rica/) and [7-day itinerary](/costa-rica-itinerary-7-days/) show how it fits.

## Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It suits birders, couples and travelers who want a quiet first or last night outside the city. You'll need a car or a transfer, since it's out in the countryside.

It isn't a beach hotel or a full-service resort. Ask your hosts about dinner options when you book, since you'll be out in the countryside.

## Getting there

From SJO, it's about an hour's drive west toward the Pacific coast. The B&B sends directions when you book.
