## What it's like

Posada El Quijote is a bed and breakfast in Bello Horizonte, a leafy hillside neighborhood of Escazú, the suburb just west of San José. It sits on top of the first hill about 5 km from the city center, high enough to look out over the Central Valley, the city lights and the volcanoes beyond, and far enough out to stay quiet.

The house dates from the 1960s, when it was built as a family home, and some of the original wood floors and ceilings are still there. It's been a guesthouse since the mid-1990s. Andrea and Bjorn, a Colombian and Norwegian couple, took it over in 2013 and live on site with their family. We first wrote about it in 2014, and we checked it again in October 2026: the website was current and guests were still leaving reviews in 2026.

## The rooms

There are 8 rooms in three types, plus apartments for longer stays:

- **Standard rooms** have a queen bed or two twins.
- **Superior rooms** have a king bed, a kitchenette for light cooking and a private terrace facing the garden.
- **Deluxe rooms** have a king or two queen beds, with a patio or balcony.
- **Two studio apartments** have their own entrance, a full kitchen, laundry facilities, a sitting area and a balcony.
- **A family apartment**, the largest unit, has a full kitchen, a king bed with city views, a second bedroom with a bunk bed and a terrace onto the garden.

All rooms have a private bathroom, cable TV and handmade wood furniture. The studios, deluxe and superior rooms have air conditioning.

## Breakfast and services

Breakfast is included and cooked to order, either American style or a typical Costa Rican plate, served on the front terrace among plants and a fountain. During the day you can use the gardens, the pool, the library and the back terrace, which is the spot for sunset and city lights.

Reception is staffed around the clock, and the owners can arrange airport pickups, private drivers and transport to other parts of the country. There's Wi-Fi, laundry service, safes and secure parking.

## What to do from here

The posada works with local tour operators for day trips from San José, such as Poás Volcano, coffee farm visits, rafting and city walks. Escazú itself has plenty of restaurants and shopping close by. If you're heading out to the coast or the mountains next, see our guide to [getting around Costa Rica](/getting-around-costa-rica/) and our page on [San José and Liberia airports](/costa-rica-airports-sjo-or-liberia/).

## Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It suits travelers who want a quiet, personal place to land after a flight or spend a last night before flying home, plus anyone staying a while in the San José area. It's not a resort, and it's not walkable to downtown San José, so plan on taxis or a car for city sightseeing.

## Getting there

From Juan Santamaría airport (SJO), you head toward San José on Highway 1, take the beltway toward Escazú, then climb into Bello Horizonte. The hotel shows up on Google Maps and Waze, and it can send a driver to meet you at the airport.
