## What it's like

Monteverde's cloud forest sits along the Cordillera de Tilarán, high enough that clouds blow through the trees most days. The result is a forest where nearly every branch is covered in moss, ferns, orchids and bromeliads, and the light is soft and green. It's cool, damp and very different from the beaches most people pair it with.

The reserve was founded in 1972. Its story starts with a group of Quaker families from Alabama who settled here in 1951 and named the area Monteverde, "green mountain." Visiting scientists urged them to keep the forest above their farms to protect their water. Biologists kept coming, and the Tropical Science Center, a Costa Rican conservation foundation, bought the first land for the reserve. Today the reserve says it's on the IUCN Green List (2025), and it gets around 120,000 visitors a year.

## What you'll see

More than 400 bird species and about 100 mammal species have been recorded in the reserve, along with over 2,500 plant species, including a remarkable number of orchids. Birds are the highlight for many visitors. Mammals are harder: they're shy, the forest is dense, and fog often limits the view. That's why a guide makes such a difference here.

## Visiting options

The reserve offers three main ways in, according to its official site:

- **Cloud Forest Walk (self-guided):** 7:30 am to 4 pm. Stay on the trails.
- **Natural History Walk (guided):** 7:30 am to 1 pm, led by naturalists.
- **Night Walk (guided):** Starts at 6 pm. Many animals, from frogs to sleeping birds, are easier to see after dark.

The reserve strongly recommends booking a time slot online and arriving 15 minutes early. Your time slot is also the shuttle departure time, and if you're late, entry can't be guaranteed. The shuttle doesn't apply to the Night Walk.

## Planning tips

Bring a rain jacket and a warm layer, even in the dry season. Wear shoes with grip, as trails can be muddy. Early mornings are best for birds and the quietest trails. Allow half a day for a guided walk, or longer if you want to keep exploring on your own.

## Getting there and where to stay

Monteverde is in the mountains between the Central Valley, Arenal and the Guanacaste coast, and the last stretch of road is winding. Most visitors spend two nights in the area and use Santa Elena village as a base. [Cloud Forest Lodge](/monteverde-cloud-forest-lodge/), on a private reserve near town, is profiled on this site. Our [Monteverde guide](/monteverde/) covers roads, transfers from Arenal and other reserves nearby, and the [birdwatching guide](/birdwatching-costa-rica/) explains how Monteverde fits a birding route.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need to book in advance?
The reserve strongly recommends booking a time slot online. It's worth doing a few days ahead, especially from December to April.

### Is a guide worth it?
Yes, for most visitors. Wildlife is hard to spot in the dense, foggy forest, and a naturalist will find far more than you will alone.

### What should I wear?
Layers, a rain jacket and shoes with grip. It's cooler and wetter than the coast.

### Is there a night tour?
Yes. The reserve runs a guided Night Walk starting at 6 pm.
